14 MarFantastic Finlay
We are delighted to bring you a very special update about Finlay. When Finlay first arrived to our home we never imagined he would have such a bright future. You can read about his early days here.
His mama sent us an update recently filled with Finlay’s latest news and we cannot believe how grown up he looks.
Finlay is continuing to thrive and is a very happy, healthy boy! He is now in 3rd grade He’s very young for 3rd grade – our cutoff is December 31st and his birthday is in mid December – but he’s doing great and holding his own despite the increased workload. He is really getting into reading this year, and really loves the fact that he now takes Science twice a week. He sometimes says he wants to be a scientist when he grows up! (The Butterfly Home staff always felt there was a scientist in the making with Finlay. Read about an older blog post here).
Finlay has a wide range of interests and is getting more involved in drumming. His favorite Christmas gift was an (electronic!) drum set. We have a photo of him sitting in front of a play drum set at the Butterfly Home so this is an interest that goes back a long way! Another favorite activity is baseball which starts up again in the spring. He is busy with after school programs including an acting lab, wiffle ball, graphic novel reading club, magic class and his drumming lessons.
We continue to take Mandarin lessons as a family on Saturdays and Finlay is doing well with that, and we spend our Sundays at our Unitiarian Church where we have a great community that includes a number of other international adoptees. We travel twice a year to the west coast to visit Finlay’s Dad’s family including two cousins of Finlay’s who were both adopted from China, and this past summer we went even farther to take a week in Hawaii to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and our 5th anniversary as a family.
A big highlight of the past year for all of us was a visit from Katie Hill who came to NYC with her sister. It was wonderful to be able to spend time together for the first time!
We also had a wonderful visit from Deb and Gary Fox, Butterfly Home friends who were in NYC from Australia in September. Our biggest family news is our recent adoption of a golden retriever mix puppy named Waffles! Finlay is excited about his new “little sister” and we are having a lot of fun with her.
We are eternally grateful beyond words to Katie, Lyn and everyone at BCH for taking such incredible care of our boy and for continuing to be such vital parts of our lives.
We love receiving these incredible updates and enjoy seeing the children thrive with their forever families.
